This comprehensive training addresses important aspects of mental wellness for emergency dispatchers by providing proactive real-time strategies, techniques, and tools tailored to individuals in high-stress careers like emergency dispatching.

Course Goal: The program aims to teach sworn and non-sworn emergency dispatchers how to manage stress and trauma effectively through healthy coping skills. It introduces techniques to calm the mind, maintain focus, and navigate high-stress situations in their profession.

Learning Objectives/ Course Content

1. The Physical Component of Stress:

·         Develop healthy coping skills to manage stress and trauma.

·         Understand the Sympathetic/Parasympathetic nervous system's role in survival.

·         Define the statistics of a 911 dispatcher's career.

·         Learn ways to slow down and reverse these statistics.

·         Utilize stretching to positively impact the brain and reduce stress.

·         Use breathing techniques to lower heart rate.

2. The Mental Component of Stress:

·         Identify and interrupt negative thought patterns.

·         Use breathing techniques to enhance focus.

·         Apply strategies like Progressive Muscle Relaxation and Abdominal Breathing for better sleep.

·         Cultivate the ability to respond rather than react.

3. The Emotional Component of Stress:

·         Learn a one-minute technique to reduce anxiety.

·         Explore "Finding Neutral" and emotional agility in an authoritative role.

·         Examine the relationship between happiness and expectations.

·         Build inner resources to prevent empathy burnout.

4. The Prolonged Component of Stress:

·         Recognize suicide warning signs within oneself and peers.

·         Practice mindfulness and breathing techniques for emotional resilience.

·         Utilize mindfulness techniques and guided imagery.

·         Connect to a deep sense of purpose for emotional strength.

·         Knowing your "why."

·         Trauma-sensitive mindfulness.

Classroom Hours: The course comprises 8 hours of total instruction.
